Belváros & Lipótváros

What it is

District V, the downtown. Two halves with different characters: Lipótváros to the north, the government and banking quarter laid out on a grid in the nineteenth century, and Belváros to the south, the older commercial core with the medieval street plan still legible underneath it.

This is where most first visits happen, and for good reason — nearly everything on a first-time list is inside it or on its edge.

What is here

The Parliament and Kossuth Square. St Stephen's Basilica. The Danube promenade with the Shoes on the Danube memorial. Vörösmarty tér, where the main Christmas market is held. Váci utca, the pedestrian shopping street. The Chain Bridge lands here. Liberty Square, with its argued-over monuments, is a few minutes from the Parliament.

What it is like

Handsome, orderly and expensive. The Lipótváros half is genuinely quiet after office hours — heavy stone buildings, wide streets, very little nightlife. Belváros is busier and, along Váci utca in particular, thoroughly touristic: this is where the photo-menu restaurants and the aggressive street touts operate.

Walk one street off the main axes and the prices drop noticeably.

Practical

Every metro line reaches it. Deák Ferenc tér, where M1, M2 and M3 meet, is the single best-connected point in the city and the airport 100E bus terminates there.

Staying here is the safe default: quiet at night, walkable to almost everything, and priced accordingly. If the budget matters more than the address, District VI next door gives you most of the same access for less.
