Ruin bars & nightlife in Budapest
In the early 2000s someone put mismatched furniture into the derelict courtyard of a condemned building in District VII and opened a bar. Twenty years later the ruin bar is the city's best-known export. Here they are, along with the rooftops, the wine bars and the clubs.

Ruin barWhat a ruin bar actually is
Not a style — a history. The old Jewish Quarter emptied out over the twentieth century and its courtyard buildings sat derelict. Rather than renovate them, people opened bars inside them and left the ruin visible. Szimpla Kert, the first, is still open and still worth an hour even though it is now firmly a tourist destination.
The good news is that the district has a dozen more within a few streets, and several of them are better after midnight and cheaper.
The other nightlife
Rooftop bars cluster in District V and VI and are at their best in summer, which is also when they are fullest. Wine bars are worth taking seriously here: Hungary has twenty-two wine regions and the good bars pour things you will not find at home. Clubs run late — the city does not really start before midnight.
Staying out of trouble
The one persistent scam in this city is being invited into a bar by someone friendly on the street and receiving a bill several times what you expected. It is specific, it is well documented, and the defence is simple: choose the bar yourself, and never follow an invitation from a stranger.

Frequently asked
What is a ruin bar in Budapest?
A bar opened inside a derelict building or courtyard in the old Jewish Quarter, furnished with salvaged and mismatched furniture and left deliberately unrenovated. Szimpla Kert was the first.
Is Budapest nightlife safe?
Yes, with one caveat: never accept an invitation into a bar from someone on the street. Inflated bills are the city's one persistent scam. Choose the venue yourself.
