District II and the wooded hills behind it — a genuine forest inside the city boundary, rising to 527 metres at János Hill, the highest point in Budapest.
Rózsadomb, the slope closest to the river, has been the city's most expensive residential address for a century. Behind and above it the villas thin out into woodland with marked walking trails.
What is here
The Elizabeth Lookout on the summit of János Hill, a stone tower with the longest view in the city. The Children's Railway, an eleven-kilometre narrow-gauge line staffed almost entirely by children aged ten to fourteen under adult supervision — a survival of a Communist-era youth programme that is now simply a very good train ride. Gül Baba's tomb, the northernmost surviving Ottoman pilgrimage site in Europe, on the Rózsadomb slope.
What it is like
Quiet, green and several degrees cooler than the centre in summer. It is residential rather than commercial, and everything requires transport.
Practical
The classic loop uses three historic railways in sequence: the cogwheel railway from Városmajor, the Children's Railway along the ridge, and the chairlift back down to Zugliget. It takes about half a day and is one of the better things to do here with children.
Staying up here suits a slower or longer trip. It is not a base for a two-day first visit — everything you came to see is a bus and a metro away.
