Újlipótváros

District XIII · Pest

Újlipótváros

Bauhaus apartment blocks north of the Parliament, a quiet riverside park and the neighbourhood bistros locals use when they want to avoid District V prices.

What it is

The southern part of District XIII, immediately north of the Parliament and separated from Lipótváros by the Grand Boulevard.

It was built up mostly in the 1930s, which makes it architecturally distinct from everything around it: modernist and Bauhaus apartment blocks rather than nineteenth-century tenements, with flat façades, corner windows and balconies.

What is here

Szent István park, a strip of green along the river with one of the best views of Margaret Island. Pozsonyi út, the neighbourhood's spine, lined with small shops, bookshops and cafés. The Hungarian Railway History Park is further out. There is little in the way of major sights, and that is the point.

What it is like

Residential, comfortable and unhurried — the district Budapest residents name when asked where they would live. It has a village-like commercial life along a few streets and almost no tourism.

During the war this area held a number of the protected houses under Swedish and Swiss diplomatic cover, including those associated with Raoul Wallenberg; several carry plaques.

Practical

Tram 4 or 6 along the Grand Boulevard and the M3 metro both put the centre five to ten minutes away. Walking to the Parliament takes about fifteen minutes along the river.

For accommodation this is the value option among genuinely convenient districts: the same money buys noticeably more room than in District V, and the streets are quiet at night.

Frequently asked

Which district of Budapest is Újlipótváros in?

Újlipótváros is District XIII, on the Pest side, east of the Danube. It is easy to verify from the postcode: the four digits start with 1 and the next two give the district, so any address here begins 113. That is the quickest way to find out where a listing actually is before you book it.

What is worth seeing in Újlipótváros?

The best-known sights here are Flippermúzeum. The full list, with opening hours and a map, is further up this page.

Where should I eat in Újlipótváros?

Among the best-rated restaurants in the district are Csevapivo | Kafana Balkan Grill & Beer, Tökmag Vegan Street Food and Gaby’s. The ratings come from Google and are refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements.

Is Újlipótváros a good area to stay in?

It depends what you want from it. The accommodation section above lists a few options in the district, and the write-up at the top of this page says plainly who the area suits and who it does not. The map at the foot of the page is centred on Újlipótváros itself.

Are there thermal baths in Újlipótváros?

Yes — Mandala Day Spa Budapest. Budapest sits on an active geological fault line, which is why thermal springs surface in districts all over the city rather than in one spa quarter.

Does Újlipótváros have any nightlife?

Yes, though not at the intensity of the Jewish Quarter. Reference points in the district include Budapest Jazz Club and RIFF Club Budapest.
