Gellért Hill & Tabán
The Buda cliff over the river: the Citadella lookout, the Cave Church, and the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths at its foot.
What it is
The Buda bank between the Liberty and Elisabeth bridges, dominated by the dolomite cliff of Gellért Hill rising 235 metres straight out of the river, with the old Tabán quarter in the dip behind it.
Tabán was a dense neighbourhood of Serbian and Greek families that was demolished in the 1930s as a slum clearance. What replaced it is parkland, which is why the area between the hill and the castle is oddly empty for such a central location.
What is here
The Citadella and the Liberty Statue on the summit. The Cave Church cut into the rock at the foot of the hill. The Gellért Baths and the Rudas Baths, a few minutes apart along the embankment. The Gellért monument on the slope facing Elisabeth Bridge.
What it is like
Green, steep and quiet. There is very little commercial life on the hill itself — no shops, few restaurants — and the pleasure of the area is the walking.
The climb to the Citadella takes a steep half-hour on stepped paths from the embankment, and the view from the top is the best free thing in Budapest: the whole river bend, the Parliament, four bridges and the Castle in a single frame.
Practical
Trams 19, 41, 47 and 49 run along the embankment at the foot. Buses climb partway up.
Take water in summer — the paths have almost no shade, and the hill is genuinely exposed.
