Terézváros & Andrássy Avenue

What it is

District VI, built around Andrássy Avenue — the boulevard cut through the city between 1872 and 1885 in deliberate imitation of Haussmann's Paris, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site along its whole length.

It changes character as it goes. The downtown end is dense and commercial; the middle is grand apartment blocks and embassies; the far end widens into villas before opening onto Heroes' Square.

What is here

The Hungarian State Opera, reopened in 2022 after a long restoration. The House of Terror at Andrássy út 60. Liszt Ferenc tér, a short pedestrian square lined end to end with terraces. The Oktogon crossing, where the boulevard meets the Grand Boulevard. The M1 metro runs the length of Andrássy a few metres below the pavement.

What it is like

Lively without being a nightlife district — the distinction matters if you are choosing where to sleep. There are bars and a lot of restaurants, but the noise stops at a reasonable hour and the residential streets behind the boulevard are quiet.

The stretch around Liszt Ferenc tér is where the terrace culture concentrates in summer, and it is unashamedly aimed at visitors. The streets north of it are where locals actually eat.

Practical

The M1 is the fastest way along the avenue and is a listed monument in its own right — shallow stations, short trains, wooden panelling, open since 1896.

This is the best value of the central districts: good access, real character, and prices below District V for the same walk into town.
