Each day stays on one side of the river on purpose. Crossing the Danube twice in a day is the single easiest way to waste an afternoon here.

Day 1

Mostly Pest — the flat east bank · 6.5 h of activity

  1. Morning

    Parliament, inside

    Guided tour only, and it sells out — book before you travel. Forty-five minutes covering the grand staircase, the dome hall and the Holy Crown.

    Széchenyi Baths

    The big one: eighteen pools, three of them outdoors and warm all winter. Allow three hours, take flip-flops, and go early or late to dodge the crush.

  3. Evening

    The river after dark

    Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle are all floodlit and all line up along one stretch of water. Either an evening cruise, or free from the Buda embankment.

Day 2

Mostly Buda — the hilly west bank · 5.5 h of activity

  1. Morning

    Castle Hill on foot

    Up by funicular or bus 16, then Matthias Church, the Fisherman's Bastion terraces and the lanes behind them. Go early — the hill belongs to tour groups from about ten.

    Rudas Baths and the rooftop pool

    The Ottoman octagonal pool under its dome dates to the sixteenth century; the rooftop pool looks straight down the Danube. Check the single-sex day schedule before you plan around it.

Day 3

  1. Morning

    St Stephen's Basilica and the promenade

    The Basilica, its panorama terrace, then down to the river past the Shoes on the Danube memorial and across the Chain Bridge.

    Heroes' Square and the City Park

    The square, then whichever of the museums around it suits: Fine Arts, Ethnography, or the House of Music. Vajdahunyad Castle sits behind, and the zoo is next door.

    Dinner in Pest

    Book ahead for anything good — the better Budapest restaurants are small and fill up. Check the bill for a service charge before you tip on top of it.
