Choosing a district
District V (Belváros–Lipótváros) — the safe default. You can walk to the Parliament, the Basilica, the river and the market hall. Quiet at night, and priced accordingly.
District VI (Terézváros) — Andrássy Avenue and the Opera. Excellent value and well connected by the M1 metro. Lively without being a nightlife district.
District VII (Erzsébetváros) — cheapest of the central options, and the most fun to be in. It is also where the ruin bars are. A room facing an inner courtyard can be loud until four in the morning, and the listing will not warn you. Ask which way the room faces.
District I (Castle District) — beautiful, quiet, and up a hill. Lovely to wake in, less lovely to come home to after dinner in Pest.
District XIII (Újlipótváros) — residential, ten minutes from the centre by tram, and where the same money buys noticeably more space.
What to check before booking
Whether there is a lift, because five-storey nineteenth-century buildings without one are common. Whether the room faces the street or the courtyard. And whether the "air conditioning" in a summer listing is a real unit or a fan.
