When to visit Budapest
Spring and autumn are the comfortable months. Winter is underrated, and August is hotter than people expect.
Spring (April–June)
The best all-round window. Warm enough for the outdoor pools by late May, cool enough to walk all day, and the parks are at their best. Prices have not yet reached summer levels.
Summer (July–August)
Genuinely hot, regularly above 30°C, and the Castle Hill has almost no shade. The city empties of locals in August and fills with visitors. The compensation is the outdoor bathing culture — the lidos and Margaret Island exist for exactly this — and a dense festival calendar.
Autumn (September–October)
Arguably the best month is September: summer warmth without summer crowds, and the light on the river is at its best.
Winter (November–February)
Underrated. This is when the thermal baths make the most sense: sitting in a 38°C outdoor pool with frost in the air is the city's signature experience, and it does not work in July. The Christmas markets run from late November through December. Days are short and grey, museums are empty, and prices are at their lowest outside the holiday weeks.
Dates that move prices
The Formula 1 weekend at the Hungaroring, the August national holiday, and the Christmas market season all raise central accommodation prices sharply. Check before you assume a quiet week.
