What it is

A large outer district in south-east Pest, and the one piece of Budapest that essentially every visitor touches without registering it: Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport stands inside its boundary.

Beyond the airport it is a residential district of family houses, interwar suburban streets and the large Havanna housing estate.

What is here

Honestly: not much for a visitor, and there is no point pretending otherwise. The district's interest is functional rather than sightseeing.

What it does have is the arrival and departure infrastructure — which makes it worth understanding if you are flying in late, out early, or with an awkward connection. A hotel here is near the runway and nowhere near anything else, which is occasionally exactly what you want and usually not.

There is also a local history museum and a set of quiet interwar streets that are pleasant enough if you happen to be staying nearby.

What it is like

Suburban, spread out, low-rise, ordinary. It is where people live, not where they go out.

Who it suits

Almost nobody as a base — with one real exception: a very early flight or a very late arrival, where thirty minutes saved on the transfer is worth more than being in the city.

The practical catch

Being in District XVIII does not mean being near the airport terminal, and the district is big. If you are booking here specifically for the flight, check the actual distance to the terminal rather than trusting the district name — and remember that there is no metro to the airport, so a hotel that looks close on a map may still need a taxi.
