What it is

The eastern edge of Budapest, and the largest district by area — formed in 1950 from five separate villages, of which Rákoskeresztúr and Rákoscsaba kept the strongest identities.

It is mostly low-density: family houses, gardens, allotments, and open land that stops looking like a capital city well before the boundary.

What is here

Village churches and centres, the oldest of which go back several centuries and sit surrounded by suburbia that arrived much later.

Open space. This is one of the few parts of Budapest where the countryside genuinely begins inside the administrative border.

There is no museum, no monument and no attraction that would appear on a city itinerary, and the district makes no claim otherwise.

What it is like

Semi-rural. Quiet to the point of sleepiness outside the small centres.

Who it suits

Residents. For a visitor, the only real reason to come is if you are staying with someone here or passing through towards Gödöllő.

The practical catch

There is no metro and the district is enormous — journey times from the centre run to an hour. If a listing tempts you with a cheap room "in Budapest" out here, check the actual commute before booking, because the price difference will not cover the time.
