What it is
A north-eastern outer district made by stitching together several formerly independent villages and villa colonies — Mátyásföld, Cinkota, Sashalom, Rákosszentmihály — in 1950.
What is here
The villa colony. Mátyásföld was laid out around 1890 as a summer resort for well-off Budapest families, and a good number of the original villas survive along its leafy streets. It has the particular atmosphere of a place built for holidays that later became somewhere people simply live.
An aviation footnote. The Mátyásföld airfield was one of Hungarian aviation's early centres, and aircraft manufacturing continued in the district for decades. Little is on display, but it explains the street names.
Erzsébetliget, a park with a lido and sports facilities, which is the district's social centre.
What it is like
Green, low-rise and thoroughly suburban. Families, gardens, quiet streets, a slow weekend rhythm.
Who it suits
Not visitors, in the ordinary sense. It suits someone staying longer in Budapest who wants to see what the city looks like where nobody is performing for tourists.
The practical catch
It is a long way out and the transport is bus-and-HÉV rather than metro. There is no single attraction here that justifies the trip on its own, so treat it as somewhere to wander if you are already nearby, not as a destination.
