Rákospalota & Pestújhely

What it is

A northern outer district formed from three quite different places: Rákospalota, a village with a documented history back to the Middle Ages; Pestújhely, an interwar suburb laid out on a grid; and Újpalota, a large housing estate built in the 1970s.

They sit next to one another and have never really merged in character, which makes the district an unusually clear cross-section of how Budapest grew.

What is here

The old village core around the Rákospalota church, with a local history museum that covers the district's transformation from farming settlement to suburb.

Újpalota, which is worth a word because prefabricated housing estates are a real part of the Central European twentieth century and this is a well-kept example — wide green space between the blocks, functioning local infrastructure, and nothing like the reputation the type carries abroad.

What it is like

Residential and unhurried. No tourism infrastructure whatsoever.

Who it suits

Nobody making a short visit. It is relevant if you are staying in northern Pest, or if socialist-era urban planning is a genuine interest of yours.

The practical catch

Getting here means bus or suburban rail, not metro, and the three parts of the district are far enough apart that walking between them is a commitment. Pick the one you actually want to see.
