January splits in two. The first week still carries the Christmas lights and the New Year crowd; from about the eighth onwards the city empties, prices fall to their lowest point of the year, and Budapest becomes a place you have largely to yourself.
That second half is the argument. Sitting in an outdoor pool at Széchenyi while the air is below freezing and the steam is too thick to see across is the single most Budapest thing there is, and it only exists in these weeks. The museums are empty on weekday mornings, restaurant tables need no booking, and the historic coffee houses do the job they were built for.
The cost is daylight — it is dark by half four — and the risk of a grey week with nothing to look at. Come for the indoor city and the water, not for the views, and January is the best value in the calendar.
What to know
- Bath prices rose about 5 per cent city-wide on 7 January 2026.
- The Christmas markets close on or just after 1 January.
- 1 January is a public holiday; most shops and many restaurants are shut.
