November has the fewest sunshine hours of any month bar December, it is dark by half four, and the outdoor city closes down. That is the honest version. What is left is the indoor city, which happens to be the good one: the baths, the coffee houses, the museums, the concert season at full strength and the ruin bars without a queue.
Then, from about the middle of the month, the Christmas markets open. The last third of November is the beginning of the best season Budapest has, at hotel prices that are a fraction of December's, in a city that is already lit.
That combination — cheapest rates, markets open, no crowds yet — makes the last ten days of November the single most underrated week and a half in the Budapest calendar.
