October is the photographer's month. The low late-afternoon sun down the Danube does something to the Parliament and the bridges that no other month manages, the Buda hills turn properly, and the haze of summer is gone.
Go up while it lasts: Gellért Hill, the Elizabeth Lookout at the top of János Hill, and the Citadella, reopened in spring 2026 after renovation with a permanent exhibition and a rooftop terrace. Roast chestnut stands appear on the boulevards and the market halls are at their fullest.
23 October is a national holiday marking the 1956 revolution — ceremonies, closed shops, and a city that takes the day seriously. The weather turns properly cold in the last week, which is when the outdoor pools become the main event again.
