The first three weeks of September are the best of both halves of the year. It is warm enough for the terraces and the river, cool enough to walk Castle Hill at midday without suffering, and the summer crowd disappears the moment European schools go back.
The Budapest Wine Festival — 9 to 12 September in 2026 — puts several hundred Hungarian producers in the courtyards of Buda Castle, on the hill, with the city below. It is the best-timed event of the year, and it lands exactly when the country's wine regions are having their best month.
Day trips are at their peak too: the Danube Bend with the boats still running, or Lake Balaton's north shore during the grape harvest. Book early — September is high season for city breaks even though it does not feel like one.
