August is hot, expensive and full, and it contains the two dates that define the Budapest calendar. Sziget — 11 to 15 August in 2026 — brings a very large festival crowd to Óbuda Island and fills accommodation across the city. 20 August, St Stephen's Day, is the national holiday, with the largest fireworks display in Hungary over the Danube and a river bank that is effectively impassable.
If either is why you are coming, book months ahead and enjoy it: 20 August on the water is one of the genuinely great things this city does. If neither is, these are the two weeks of the year to avoid.
Late August is meaningfully better than early. The heat eases, the festival crowd goes home, and by the last days the city is already tipping into September, which is the best time to be here.
