Budapest in spring: the season most people book by accident

Spring is the most commonly mis-booked season in Budapest, because people treat March, April and May as one thing. They are three separate holidays, and only one of them is reliably good.

March — winter with better light

March is still cold. The terraces are not open, the outdoor pools at Széchenyi are still the main event rather than a bonus, and there is a real chance of snow in the first half.

What March has is price and space. It is one of the cheapest months of the year, the baths are uncrowded, the museums are empty on weekday mornings, and the light is already noticeably better than February's.

15 March is a national holiday — the anniversary of the 1848 revolution — with ceremonies at the Hungarian National Museum steps, where Petőfi's poem was read, and flags across the city. Many museums are free that day and most shops are shut.

Treat March as a winter trip with longer days, and it will not disappoint you.

April — the month that cannot be predicted

April in Budapest swings between fifteen degrees and sunshine, and eight degrees and rain, sometimes in the same week. Anyone who tells you April is a good time to visit is describing a coin flip.

Book April only if you can be flexible. The trip works if you plan indoor options you actually want — the House of Terror, the Museum of Fine Arts, the coffee houses, a bath — rather than treating them as a wet-weather fallback. The museums guide helps you choose in advance.

Easter, when it falls in April, brings a market to Vörösmarty tér that is a smaller relative of the Christmas one, with painted eggs and folk crafts, and it is genuinely pleasant.

May — the best month of the year

May is when Budapest is at its best, and it is not close.

The chestnut trees on Andrássy are in flower, Margaret Island is at its greenest, the terraces are open, the evenings are long enough to walk after dinner, and the city has not yet filled with summer crowds or summer heat. Everything the summer guide has to work around simply is not a problem yet.

What to do that is specific to spring

Walk the hills before the leaves get heavy. Gellért Hill and the Buda hills have their clearest long views in April and early May, before the summer haze.

Margaret Island in blossom. The rose garden and the Japanese garden are worth the crossing, and the island has no cars.

A bath outdoors in cool air. March and early April still give you the steam-in-cold-air effect that makes Széchenyi famous, without the winter queues.

The Danube Bend in May. The boat services resume, the hills are green, and Visegrád is at its best.

Lake Balaton's north shore works from late April — wine, hills and Tihany do not need swimming weather.

What is in flower, and when

Spring in Budapest arrives in a fairly reliable order, and it is worth knowing because the city's best free spectacle is botanical.

Late March: magnolias in the courtyards and on Margaret Island, and the first almond blossom on the lower slopes of Gellért Hill.

Mid-April: cherry and plum blossom across the City Park and the Buda suburbs, and the tulip beds around Vajdahunyad Castle.

Late April to mid-May: the chestnuts on Andrássy and the lilac in the Palace Quarter courtyards — the two weeks when the boulevards genuinely smell of something.

Late May and June: the roses, including the ones around Gül Baba's tomb, which is the best small garden in the city and almost never crowded.

Practical

Pack for two seasons in March and April. A waterproof layer is not optional, and the temperature difference between a sunny afternoon and the same evening is large.

Book accommodation early for May, especially around the Spring Festival and the two public holidays. The 2026 short-term rental restrictions in Districts VI and VII have tightened central supply.

Everything is open. Unlike the deep winter, the boats run, the terraces work, the hills are accessible and the day trips make sense.

The short answer

Go in May. If you cannot, go in March and treat it as a cheap winter break with better light.
